Kuala Lumpur International Airport is the gateway to Malaysia, and a rental car is the most flexible way to explore from there. This guide covers car rental at KLIA and KLIA2, plus the best places to drive to.
KLIA vs KLIA2: which terminal?
KLIA (Terminal 1) serves full-service airlines; KLIA2 serves low-cost carriers like AirAsia. They are separate buildings connected by train. Tell your operator your terminal so pickup is seamless — especially for late-night arrivals.
The pickup process
- Share your flight number and terminal when booking on WhatsApp.
- Bring your licence/passport (and IDP if required).
- Do the pickup checklist and confirm the deposit.
- Top up Touch ‘n Go for highway tolls to the city.
Driving from KLIA
The airport sits in Sepang, about 45–60 minutes from central KL via the ELITE/MEX highways. Roads are excellent and well signed in English.
Top attractions to drive to
- Kuala Lumpur city — Petronas Twin Towers, Bukit Bintang, KL Tower.
- Putrajaya — 20 minutes away; striking architecture and lakeside drives.
- Sepang — Sepang International Circuit and beaches.
- Genting Highlands & Batu Caves — easy day trips north of KL.
